Dr Andrea Kennel studied computer science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) and added a PhD in computer science.

In her more than 25 years of professional experience, she has always combined practice and teaching.

Since 2014, Andrea is a lecturer a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Brugg/Windisch (www.fhnw.ch), where she is responsible for database lectures in computer science and data science.

She also supervises bachelor theses and project teams that implement customer projects. In addition, she runs her own company, which she founded in 2005 (www.infokennel.ch). In this function she worked and still works mainly in Oracle DWH projects as Lead Data Architect and as developer or project manager.

She regularly gives presentations at conferences and writes articles.

During Contech2022,Andrea Kennel will present Track 9 ¾ or the magic of data modelling

Track 9 ¾ or the magic of data modelling – Abstract:

At the end of the lecture, you will take home different modelling patterns and know when which one fits and what the strengths of these patterns are. Just as a wizard or witch knows the effect of magic spells.
Description:

Many projects start with data modelling.
Many projects suffer from a poor data model. In the workshop we will illustrate different principles of modelling based on an interesting example. How can train compositions like the Hogwarts Express be managed in a relational database?

We assume that the magic train has one or more locomotives and different wagons for passengers and cargo.

The task contains a few requirements that turn out to be not so easy when modelling. For example, it is not trivial to find the right spell, in other words, the right modelling.

Respectively, there are different ways to map the requirement to a data model. The presentation will explain the initial situation and go into the different solution variants.

As each variant has advantages and disadvantages. At the end of the lecture, you will take home different modelling patterns and know when which one fits and what the strengths of these patterns are. Just as a wizard or witch knows the effect of magic spells.
